MEMORIAL PARK AND PERMANENT PROTECTION

President of the City Municipality of Palilula, Prof Dr Igor Novakovic with associates and representatives of Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments visited complex of Old Nis cemetery “Gorica”. It was completed works on the fence and Western gate of the cemetery is set table labeled of the complex, which is from year 1987 placed under the protection of the low and represents significant cultural heritage. Members of the Assembly of the City Municipality of Palilula, on the 19th autumn meeting, passed a unanimous decision on launching the initiative that space of Old cemetery turn in Memorial park. Its new phase ahead of activity of planning of the space which after three decades of “sleeping” with realizing of the project “Regulation of Old cemetery” gets new look. Thanks to the projects and actions, in cooperation with the City, PUC and NGO, this space for now is season held.

Old cemetery in Nis covers an area of 8 ha, from this area more then 3,4 ha is abandoned area. However in the opinion of president Novakovic, as long as this complex does not allow for permanent protection, regular maintenance and monitoring, cant be expected successfully to achieve the set goals. After all vandals still and further destroy graves – says Novakovic, arise illegal dumps, breaking up graves and busts disappear, vegetation is re-covered area that we already cleaned. We expect – highlight president Igor Novakovic that will create conditions that until end of year 2012, whole complex of “Old cemetery under Gorica” gain an entirely new look.
